Cultivating A Beginner’s Mindset

Nobody likes a know it all.

Am I right?

When it comes to being an artist and creator, it’s necessary to cultivate a beginner’s mindset. To stay curious. To let yourself explore.

Part of creating music (or any other form of art) is starting from scratch.

Accepting where you’re at right now.

Being ok with square one.

Acknowledging when you don’t know how to do something, or don’t know how to do something well.

Yet.

When we approach songwriting, performing, recording, or any other form of creative expression in a spirit of meekness, we allow ourselves to be taught.

And it’s only when we are teachable that we are able to grow.

Cultivating beautiful art takes time and care.

But we all have to start somewhere!

Let yourself be ok with being a beginner!

Take a class in something you’ve been wanting to learn how to do this year and approach it with humility.

Be the new student, even if the other kids in your class are half your age.

Have the courage to reach out to someone with more experience and say, “Hey, can you teach me more about that? I want to learn from you.”

When you adopt a beginner’s mindset, you’ll be surprised at how much more open the world feels to you.

You don’t have anything to prove.

You become a student of your own life.
