Why working with a vocal coach is AWESOME!
Many of you have asked me questions about improving your voice without taking vocal lessons, and I wanted to give you some insight into why I believe working with a vocal coach can be a game changer for you as a singer and performer.
Do you absolutely need vocal training to be an amazing singer?
Nope!
Can a vocal coach magically turn you into a perfect singer?
No…no, they can’t unfortunately.
BUT, I’ve found that working with a professional vocal coach has helped boost my confidence as a singer, helped me learn techniques and warm-ups that I use every time I sing, discover and develop my vocal style, and extend my range.
Finding the Right Coach
I’ve worked with four different vocal coaches over the years, both male and female, and have learned many valuable things from each of them.
Everybody needs different things from a coach. Find someone who you connect with personally, preferably someone who has a beautiful voice you admire.
I recently decided to find a new coach who was a woman because personally, I need someone who makes singing feel fun and approachable, someone I feel like I can talk to and relate to on an emotional and personal level.
She’s helped me work through many of my personal barriers to singing joyfully, and even suggests books or articles for me to read that she thinks would be helpful.
Find a coach who you feel good around, someone who will help you unleash the voice you already have inside you!
Become your own vocal coach.
Unless you’re Beyoncé, most of us don’t have our coach with us every time we sing. It’s important to record your lessons and repeat them at home, on your own!
I’ve learned that the real growth occurs in the time you spend practicing, not necessarily during your lessons and definitely not during your performances.
I do the vocal warm-ups I’ve learned in my lessons before recording or practicing, and try to implement the techniques I’ve learned into the songs I’m writing or arranging.
It’s up to you to put in the work to become more confident in your voice! A vocal coach isn’t going to do it for you.
The new year is a great opportunity to hone your vocal talent, so why not make the investment in yourself and your voice and seek out a great coach to mentor and guide you?
